Lean into yoga

Lean into yoga and in to what interests you

Yoga and I go back some time. From the first practice, I was interested. Interested in the shapes I was making with my body, the words the teacher was saying, the focus of the other students around me and then after the class, how peaceful I felt. Since that first class, yoga has stuck with me, despite me not always sticking with it. In the past I have been a faithless friend, forgoing my practice in favour of other things -a nice long lie in bed proving to be most persuasive. However what I have found on my yoga journey is that yoga has as many dimensions as I do. It can be a long, strong, physical practice but it can also be short and soft and just as effective. It can be done in a studio, outside, in bed, waiting for the tube, in lycra, old trackies, pjs, jeans - you get the idea. Better to do something than nothing. Yes, yoga is a discipline - but luckily one that works in tandem with who we are. It really is possible to sleep in, or have a cup of tea in bed and still be a yogi. To practice yoga is essentially to practice being who we are and leaning in to that story is the truly interesting bit.

Yoga therapy

Yoga therapy sessions are normally one-to-one and can most easily be defined as yoga where there is a specific need. These needs might range from musculo-skeletal strength and conditioning for rehabilitation to coping with emotional states like grief, loss, fear or anxiety or dealing with the mind, managing long term thought patterns impacted by factors like stress or life transitions. Often the need will cross into all of these realms, reflecting the belief that the body, emotions and mind are all inseparably linked.  Yoga therapy looks holistically at each person with practices including movement, breathwork, relaxation and meditation with further techniques to develop self-awareness like mantra, mudra and chanting sequenced to suit each client. Clients receive a scribed home practice to keep and refer back to. Initial sessions last 90 minutes and include time to assess posture, breathing and movement. Follow up sessions are 60 minutes.

"In this body, in this town of Spirit, there is a little house shaped like a lotus and in that house there is a little space. One should know what is there. What is there? Why is it so important?
There is as much in that little space within the heart as there is in the whole world outside.  Heaven, earth, fire, wind, sun, moon, lightning, stars, whatever is and whatever is not, everything is there."
Chandogya Upanishad
